It seems each week I have a different taste of games and consoles to
review and somehow this one popped up, I was playing various Master System games because I
just got my Master System II repaired and threw in World Grand Prix because I
never played it before. I was pleased and displeased at the same time. With WGP we have are racing with Indy cars and bears a big resemblance to Pole Position. The catch is that Pole Position is a lot more enjoyable. The controls are very responsive and accurate, you have a manual two-speed tranny and speed perception is pretty good too. The graphics are exceptional, featuring bright color and lots of background details, and this looks better than any NES racer of the day. My quibble with this game is the poor AI and lack of variety in the racing. You have to qualify for the next track (which is quite difficult), to see a different background. The only options come in the way of three difficulty levels. Failure to qualify means a game over and starting back at scratch. The AI is exceedingly tough to deal with and the other racers on the track are out to screw you any way that they can. If you are in the opposite lane then they will swerve to yours and cause a crash. If there is a car in both lanes, they both switch at the same time. If there are two cars in one lane and you get close to one switching lanes, it makes it impossible for you to pass. This alone makes the game annoying. Harder difficulty levels only worsen this effect. This game does have a build-your-own-track which is kind of cool, but only features the first race background palette and no options for racing either. This game is not a bad game overall and can be playable after you get used to the opponent's movements. Die hard racing fans will enjoy this, but casual fans will be bored like me. If you want a good SMS racer play Hang-On which is my personal favorite SMS racer. |
