How hard can it be to make a decent tennis game? Lets face it, it's simply Pong with a realistic physics engine right? Granted, there have been a few decent titles released over the years, but Virtua Tennis on the Game Boy Advance isn't one of them.

Based entirely off of Sega's Virtua Tennis TK2 on the Dreamcast, this game should be outstanding on every level. The problem here is that the development process was handed over to the Altron corporation and they stripped the game of it's basic features. Everything looks fine from the start, but the foundation crumbles once actual play begins.

All of the features from the console version have been included. The world tour mode, basically an RPG tennis game, is fully functioning, and even a few new mini-games have been added to the mix. These mini-games enhance your player as he/she (you play as a male and female) moves up the rankings in the world of tennis. Bonus items can also be unlocked like new racquets, shoes, stadiums, and other useless oddities. The standard exhibition and tournament mode have been included also.

Once onto the court, the game falls flat. the speed has taken a major hit, killing the intensity of the game. The controls have been loosened up which is pretty much the dagger. The tight controls from the Dreamcast versions is what made this so playable and easy to pick up. The portable version has none of that. Also, while the game features many of the top tennis stars, you'll hardly recognize them on the court. Useless, hardly animated sprites take to the courts which look alright, but it's not like it's hard to make a tennis court.

Considering that everything else in this game follows it's counterpart to the tee (the menus look EXACT), why would they mess up the gameplay? It's obvious Sega's TLC was not used here or we would have a better playing title. Oh, and the music (which can't be turned off) has got to go. This console is capable of better.
