Default SNES game genie which is the better version?

the one where the dashes are there when it starts up, or the one where it enters the dashes when you enter the codes?

I think the one that enters dashes as you enter the code is better. It's a newer one designed to work with games that use Super-FX and similar chips that need extra pins.

    Lightbulb SNES Game Genie versions

The original GG 1.0 is the one with the dashes already entered on bootup and is the better option for owners of a launch-era SNES for playing special chip games. It does work with Yoshi's Island despite not having the extra connectors, and I've read Megaman X2 and X3 does as well.

Somewhere along the way newer SNES systems released wouldn't work with GG 1.0 (it would still boot and everything, but the codes simply had no effect) The GG 2.0, which enters the dashes as you type, was compatible. However, no compatibility with YI.

These issues got worse with the SNES mini - only the GG 2.0 works, and even then it's limited to 2/5 codes, as only the first and last code lines have an effect.

Is that true, or could you just have a corrupt Game Genie? I have a 2.0 that has that same problem, even on the model 1 SNES. Best way to check is to enter these codes:

    0000-0000
    0000-0000
    0000-0000
    0000-0000
    0000-0000

Then press start. When it goes to your game, reset your SNES. It will go to your Game Genie. If a line reads anything other than 0000-0000, that slot is corrupted.

    i tried the
    0000-0000
test on both my game genies.... the 2.0 passed it came back all 0000-0000 but the 1.0 came back 00A0-0000 what does that mean? i tried using codes with the 1.0 and it worked...... the codes came back normal but the 0000-0000's came back different.......
all lines came back that way

    00A0-0000
    00A0-0000
    00A0-0000
    00A0-0000
    00A0-0000

It might work upon startup, but the minute the Super FX chip is needed during something like a boss fight, it's not going to work correctly. The Super FX chip in Yoshi's Island isn't constantly being used like it is in a game like Star Fox.

I'm unsure, I wasn't a big fan of that series and didn't play the 2nd and 3rd titles until the Mega Man X collection hit the GameCube.

Wikipedia's description states it was "known for its role in mapping and transforming wireframes in the final scenes of Capcom's second and third Mega Man X series games", suggesting that it isn't in constant use just like the Super FX chip isn't in constant use in Yoshi's Island.

If so, it could appear to be functioning correctly until you reach a point in the game where that chip is utilized, where problems would be encountered if it utilizes those extra pins to each side of the primary cartridge board and the Game Genie lacks the connections to pass those through to the console.

However, since I don't own either cartridge, I couldn't tell you if it has those extra pins to each side. If it does and the Game Genie model you're using lacks those connections, I assure you you'll have problems even if initial appearances suggest that it does work correctly.
