Epyx's Robots of Dawn for the
C-64
By Scott Stilphen
Every copy of the solution I've found online are inaccurate. So after several games, I have a somewhat fixed version of
the solution. I'm still working on figuring out a step-by-step solution, and which answers (from which
people) get a positive response from the Chairman, but here's what I have:
E, E, N, N (there's a notebook here - worth taking?), SE, GET FILTER, N, S, E,
S, GET GLOVES,
N, W, S, W, W, W, W, N, W, GET DEVICE, E, TOUCH STRIP, E, W, ENTER AIRFOIL,
VASILIA, N, N, USE DEVICE,
If kicked out, ENTER AIRFOIL
Otherwise S, ENTER AIRFOIL
FASTOLFE, E, E, W, N, GIVE DEVICE TO DANEEL, S, E, W, ENTER AIRFOIL, GREMIONIS,
N, N,
If kicked out, you won't be able to get rod.
W, S, E, GET ROD (**IF** IT'S THERE, PROVES GREM'S MEANS ALONG WITH "AMADIRO DID
GREMIONIS HAVE THE MEANS)
WAIT (or any 2 directions) -> thrown out
enter airfoil, wait, E, wait
OR
WAIT, ENTER AIRFOIL, E, wait, wait
ENTER CAR, WAIT, WAIT, WAIT, E , WAIT, WAIT, ENTER CAR, WAIT, E, GET CAR (*
bug),S,E,E,E,S,
GET SHEET (IF IT'S THERE, IT PROVES VASILIA'S OPPORTUNITY. If the rod is
present, this might not be),
N, E, E, E, S, E, (USE ROD *IF* YOU HAVE IT, NOW YOU KNOW WHERE IT LEADS),
E (GET REPORT IF IT'S THERE, HELPS PROVeE AMADIRO'S MOTIVE OF ALL THINGS),
W, W, N, W, W, W, W, S,
(AMADIRO's OFFICE)
ENTER AIRFOIL, FASTOLFE, E, E, W, S, E, E, N, E, E, E, W,
(GLADIA)
(USE GLADIA'S LINE (??), IF SHE'S GUILTY ASK HER IF SHE HAD THE MEANS)
NE, E, E, N, N, GET LIGHTSPHERE, S, U, W, GET FORM, GET READER (necessary?), (go
find Gladia),
E, D, S, W, W
SHOW GLADIA FORM
(THEN YOU CAN SHOW IT TO THE CHAIRMAN FOR HER AND GREM'S OPPORTUNITY)
ENTER CAR, (wait for Institute)
E, S, E, D, E, USE LIGHTSPHERE, TOUCH STRIP, E, GET SUMMARY (not needed), W, S,
GET TORCH
Get back to Fastolfe the same way as before (using the Helical - touch rail),
but you'll have to find
your way out from there. Find the tingle field and run into it - this will put
you back at Fastolfe)
(short way) N, W, S, S, E, S, S
(long way) N, W, U, E, E, E, E, E, E, N, N, TOUCH RAIL
S, S, W, W, S, S, S
(Tingle Field puts you in airfoil)
FASTOLFE, TOUCH STRIP, E, W, W, GET BOOKFILM, BURN SAFE WITH TORCH, GET BOOKFILM
---- NOW YOU HAVE EVERYTHING YOU NEED - YOU CAN USE THE LIGHTSPHERE (??) NOW TO
GO BACK TO THE INSTITUTE (VIA ENTER CAR IF YOU HAVE IT - keep waiting until you
arrive at institute. If not you probably won't have enough time to get an
airfoil at Fastolfe's to go back),
give device to Daneel
Chairman
YES, SHOW CHAIRMAN:
if rod is present, sheet won't be (?)
rod - Gremionis's means
form - Gladia and Gremionis's opportunity
time sheet - Vasilia's opportunity
report - Amadiro's motive

These bookfilms seem like they would be important, but apparently aren't needed
by the Chairman?
READ BLUE BOOKFILM - The book is full of notes on Gladia, dating from her
arrivival on Aurora. After looking through it all, you can't help but feel that
you have just read a scientist's observations on an important specimen.
READ RED BOOKFILM - It appears to be notes on Fastolfe's latest project. He says
at the end, "The new humaniform is nearly perfect - it can even fool Daneel."
summary - worthless
nose filter
gloves
DANEEL IS NEVER GUILTY, BUT YOU CAN PROVE HIS GUILT IN ANY ENDING. ALSO - USE
THE HYPERWAVE SCREEN, WAIT IN BETWEEN SHOWS AND A NEWSCAST WILL COME UP TELLING
YOU HOW YOU'RE DOING –
START = 1 THING PROVEN
SUBSTANTIAL = 2
SOLID = 3
Screen info is not always accurate, since it doesn't consider having objects
important.
NOTES:
● Does anyone know the exact responses you have to
give the chairman in order to solve the game? None of the solutions I've found
give a step-by-step solution for beating it. Who do
you have to prove guilty? One person? 2? 3?
●
Does asking certain questions (to certain people) trigger the appearance of
needed objects (rod, sheet, report)? Because they can't always be found...
●
Can the blaster be used on anything?
●
The guide rod seems to be an important object, but if you use it and later give
it to the Chairman (as the solution describes), it doesn't appear to prove
anything to him (at least he doesn't say it does...). In one game, when I gave
him the sheet (which is an important piece of info), he stated that it proved
one character had opportunity....and then he immediately ended the game! And
there seems to be a number of objects that either have no use (can the blaster
be used on anything?? Is the viewer needed?), or no importance to solving the
game (if you get the safe open in Fastolfe's - a somewhat complicated process
that requires getting 2 other objects first - the solution says the item inside
is of no value to the case!).
●
Also, the Epyx catalogs showed a picture of the game with graphics, but so
far the only graphics I've seen is the title screen. Does the catalog
picture appear when you've solved the game?
●
BUG: If you take a cable car to the
Institute, you can take it with you when you get out. If you wait there and
keep doing this, you can have multiple cars in your inventory!
●
BUG: When Daneel is with you, you have to
specify who you’re talking to if Gladia is in the room.
●
BUG: After you visit Gladia, go back to
Fastolfe’s and contact her using the viewer. She’ll act like you haven’t met
her yet.
List of possible responses (incomplete)
VASILIA
(ask about Gladia means and motive, and of others)
*Did Gladia have motive – “Not that I know of”
**OR “Not unless she finally realized, as I did, that Dr. Fastolfe is interested
in only one thing – studying the human brain. People are just guinea pigs to
him.”
**Did Gladia have means - "If she had access to a lethal gas I imagine she could
have approached Fastolfe closely enough to shoot him with it.”
*Did Gladia have opportunity - “Are you stupider than you look? She lived next
door.”
**Did Gremionis have motive - - "I do believe the fool was in love, and if he
thought that Fastolfe was standing between him and his Solarian woman - but
that's silly. Gremionis is no murderer."
*Did Gremionis have means - "I suppose - any idiot can fire a bow."
**Did Gremionis have opportunity – “Why not? I believe he frequently visited
that Solarian woman next door, so he could have been nearby without drawing much
attention.”
Did Amadiro have motive -
Did Amadiro have means -
Did Amadiro have – opportunity -
Did you have motive - "We were not on the best of terms but I had no reason to
want Fastolfe dead."
Did you have means - (Vasilia says sarcastically) "You mean Mr. Baley, that I
may have crept over to Dr. Fastolfe's estate, walked past his guard robots, one
of which out of politeness would say, 'What a nice bow and arrow you have. Is
that a poison gas ganister on the end?' and then I would fire it at my dear
father, and Daneel - the model of super-efficiency that he is - would stand and
watch as the arrow struck him dead? No one but an Earthman would even consider
it. It would take a particularly stupid Earthman, too."
Did you have opportunity –
GREMIONIS
(ask about Amadiro, esp. opportunity; Vasilia motive & means, )
Did Amadiro have motive - "I have heard that Amadiro wants desperately to get
his hands on a humaniform robot. I see that now he is blaming Daneel for the
murder and asking that Daneel be turned over to the Institute for study. It
seems reasonable that his request will be granted."
Did Amadiro have means - "wouldn't it be possible for someone like Amadiro to
have made Daneel remember everything wrong? I mean the murder could have
happened very differently than Daneel said."
Did Amadiro have opportunity - "Well, if he tampered with Daneel, couldn't he
have done that ahead of time?" proves amadiro had opportunity
Did Vasilia have motive - "Many years ago Mr. Baley, Vasilia's life was scarred
by the realization that the man who raised her and whom she thought loved her,
was interested in her only as a subject for study. Naturally she harbors some
resentment toward him."
Did Vasilia have means - (Gremionis obviously hesitates) "Well, she did mention
to me that she is working on a project involving gases."
OR "Not that I know of"
Did Vasilia have opportunity - "Not that I know of."
*Did Gladia have motive – “Gladia? (anger crosses his face) Why would she want
to kill the man she thinks has been so compassionate toward her?”
*Did Gladia have means – “Now-you-look-here! Gladia is no murderer! She is not
capable of killing someone.”
*Did Gladia have opportunity - “Absolutely not. She and I were together all
evening. She even created a light-form of me while I was there.”
*Did you have motive – “No! I would never consider killing anyone.”
*Did you have means – “Absolutely not! Even if I could have gotten past the
guard robots – which I couldn’t! – I could not have gotten my hands on a lethal
gas.”
*Did you have opportunity – “No, for the same reason that Gladia didn’t.”
AMADIRO
(ask about Grem, esp means; others AND "TELL ME ABOUT FASTOLFE")
*Tell me about Fastolfe
*Did Gremionis have motive – “Not that I know of.”
*Did Gremionis have means – “Not that I know of.” Proves Gremionis had means, if
guilty
*Did Gremionis have opportunity -"I know of no reason why he couldn't have"
**Did Gladia have motive - "I'm not that familiar with the woman, Mr. Baley. An
interesting thought occurs to me though. She was suspected of killing her
husband on Solaria, and the hyperwave drama about that event seemed to leave
some doubt... But of course you must know the truth about that, having cleared
her of the crime."
*Did Gladia have means - (Amadiro considers) "I must admit that her involvement
would remove a bit of the mystery from the incident. Being Fastolfe's friend and
neighbor, she could have approached Fastolfe close enough to kill him without
Daneel being able to intervene."
*Did Gladia have opportunity – “Of course. She lived next door and could have
slipped over anytime.”
Did you have motive - "Mr. Baley, it is no secret that Dr. Fastolfe and I were
bitter rivals when it came to the most important issue facing Aurora today -
that of who should be allowed to colonize the galaxy. I wanted to destroy
Fastolfe, Mr. Baley - as a political force - and I soon would have. What has
held us back is our inability to create humaniform robots, but we are very close
now to accomplishing this."
Did you have means - "No, Mr. Baley, I could not have gotten past Fastolfe's
guard robots."
Did you have opportunity – “No. In fact I was at a concert with the Chairman at
the time Fastolfe was killed. So you see Mr. Bailey, I am not your villain.”
Did Vasilia have motive - "Mr. Baley, I am reasonable close to Vasilia and I can
assure y ou that although she harbors some ill feelings toward Dr. Fastolfe,
those feelings were not of sufficient intensity to drive her to kill him."
Did Vasilia have means - "Only one suspect really had the means and it isn't
Vasilia."
Did Vasilia have opportunity - "Not that I know of."
GLADIA
(USE GLADIA'S LINE (??), IF SHE'S GUILTY ASK HER IF SHE HAD THE MEANS)
*Gladia, did you have motive - (Gladia pouts indignantly) "No, Elijah. Dr.
Fastolfe has been very kind to me."
*Gladia, did you have means - "Elijah! I can imagine killing someone - if I
hated them enough and in a fit of anger - but I CAN'T imagine plotting to shoot
someone down in cold blood."
*Gladia, did you have opportunity - "No, Gremionis had come to visit me that
evening. We had been together some time when Daneel carried in Dr. Fastolfe's
body."
Did Amadiro have motive - "Dr. Amadiro is Dr. Fastolfe's strongest political
adversary. Popular support would almost certainly swing to Amadiro if Fastolfe
was out of the way."
Did Amadiro have means –
Did Amadiro have opportunity –
Did Vasilia have motive - "She is Dr. Fastolfe's daughter, and I know that there
were some bad feelings on her part toward her father. Gremionis mentioned that
to me once."
Did Vasilia have means - "I suppose so."
Did Vasilia have opportunity - "Not that I know of."
*Did Gremionis have motive - "Well, somehow he did seem to have gotten it into
his head that Fastolfe was poisoning me against him."
*Did Gremionis have means - "Gremionis? He is such a kind and gentle soul. He
can be a pest at times, with his persistent advances, but he is certainly no
murderer. Imagine him, lying in wait like - who's the ancient storybook
character - Robin Hood? (She laughs, making her look years younger)"
Did Gremionis have opportunity - "We weren't together all that evening.
Gremionis said we should say that to protect me."
* (show Gladia form) – “It’s of Gremionis.” Then she studies it as if seeing for
the first time the characteristics he had read in Gremionis that evening. “Oh
Elijah, I don’t believe Gremionis could kill someone, but I should tell you that
we weren’t together all that evening. Gremionis said we should say that to
protect me.”
Gladia, did you have opportunity (if asked the 2nd time you meet her, you get
the same reply that Gremionis gives!)
